Me Without Mirrors- Skin Deep series plays with the notion of the traditional portrait bust and contemporary issues of self-identity. The work explores the expanse of skin not in its normal three-dimensionality but by opening, flaying and flattening it out, and in the process figuratively skinning myself.

The skin is an interface, a memory, a transition, a connection and a protective layer of self. It is the outer covering, the fleshy interface between bodies and the world that defines the transition between interior and exterior. Skin, suggests Sara Ahmed (2001), remembers both 'literally in its material surface and metaphorically in the signification given to the surface' (Ahmed & Stacey 2001, p. 10). Consequently in this work I investigate the nature of perceived depth that extends to the dynamics of emotional experience and alterations in self-understanding.

Me Without Mirrors- Skin Deep series are self-portraits that confronts the stereotypical ideals of female beauty with the hope to explore, expand and reclaim the act of looking and making meaning within cultural production.
